Teaching Tools

student planting a dune seedlingThis page links to materials developed to help elementary and high school students learn about preserving and restoring California dunes. It provides a sampling of what students will learn when their classrooms participate in the Beach Garden Project.

While anyone is welcome to use these materials, we ask that you and your students always behave in the dunes in a spirit of stewardship and preservation.

Please practice dune etiquette:

  • Stay on boardwalk unless you have permission from a ranger to leave it.
  • Leave plants intact: don't pick flowers, take cuttings, or dig up or walk on growing things. Don't collect seed without ranger permission.
  • Pack out your trash.

Lesson plans

  1. Slide show overview
  2. Looking at dune plant seed
  3. Propagating native dune plant seedlings
